In the slums of Calcutta, in the barrios of South America, in communist China, in the tribes of Africa – there are so many things that divide us. From our language, our culture, our foods, our dress and even though technology has advanced where many have embraced mobile technologies. It still seems like those streets are worlds apart. However, there is one thing that all these streets have that is young people and they may not be able to have an Ipod but they all can afford a simple instrument of world equality and unity. That simple item is a ball. A futbol as is known in the rest of the world but in America it is known as soccer ball. You see unlike so many other sports where you have to have special equipment like helmets or pads or uniforms. A soccer game can be played with a simple ball and you don’t need a special field. All you need is a ball. 2010 is a world cup year and while nations gather in South Africa to see how a ball can unite and equalizes us in the large stadiums. Here in Utica New York, with its newly embraced diversity we can see a small scale the unity that a ball can bring.
